[The Slopes at Motomachi]
At the foot of Mt. Hakodate, there are 19 sloping streets running straight to the port. They are very popular with those who stroll around since there are distinct buildings and varied landscapes along them.
[Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward]
This is a notable historic building in Hakodate, designated as important cultural property. It has a magnificent main hall and rooms reserved for special guests. When members of the Imperial family visited Hakodate, they stayed and rested in the rooms.
[Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse]
This is one of the typical tourist facilities in Hakodate. The brick warehouses built in 1909 were totally renovated. The seven warehouses contain about 50 restaurants and souvenir stores.
[Hakodate-Meijikan]
This stately red-brick building was built as Hakodate Post Office in 1911. It is now used as a shopping mall. You can try your hand at making a music box.
[Hakodate Orthodox Church]
This church is that of the Orthodox Church in Japan founded in 1859 by the Russian Consulate. The existing building, built in 1916, is known as a representation of western-style buildings in Hakodate. It has been designated as important cultural property.
[Motomachi Roman Catholic Church]
This Catholic church was founded in 1877. The existing building was rebuilt in 1923. The magnificent altar in the cathedral was sent from the pope.
[Hakodate St. John’s Church]
This church is that of the Anglican Church founded by an English priest who visited Hakodate in 1874. The existing building was completed in 1979. It features the impressive cross-shaped roof.
